Film review: Instinct

Instinct is a film which talks about the psychiatrical case of a man, Ethan (Anthony Hopkins) who has just come back from Africa. He is condemned to prison for the responsibility of two murders. The thing is that he didn't stay in Africa in a normal way. He lived together with gorilas, who accepted him in their tribal civilisation form. He was glad to join them, and felt no regrets for what he left on the other side of the world (family, friends, job,...) He wanted to live along with nature. The introductory part let's us know his psychologist (Cuba Gooding Jr.). A very brilliant student from the university where Ethan used to work. They get a very hard and close relationship that begins with one of the most epic dialogs of the film.
+Ethan, please, bring me to Africa, to your happiest period.
-You don't even know what hapinness is.
+We can't leave this place if you don't help me a little bit.
-I don't know if you'll be able to follow me, Yua.

Then they begin a very strange therapy, where the leader is Ethan instead of Dr. Connor. I think the spoiling limit doesn't allow me to talk beyond this argumental point.

I had no expectatives on this film, I didn't really expected to see it, but my father insisted. I agreed to see it, and I just can't stop thinking about some of its conclusions, dialogs and situations all the time. I think that the main message that the film tries to send is "Let your animal being let you understand nature". It talks about the modern civilisation as an evil thing, that destroys everything it finds. Something that needs to prove its destructive power all the time. It makes contrast with gorilla's lifes. They are simple, they get what they need nothing else. They live along with nature, not against nature. My favourite moments of the film are:

1.-When Ethan names the doctor "Tabi wu Yua" which means Dr. Idiot. This moment makes the same effect over the audience than over the doctor. You are one more of Ethan's students in the life school.

2.-The fight between the doctor and Ethan. Ethan strangles the doctor and closes his mouth with a piece of paper. He asks him to answer a question with 3 attempts. If he doesn't solve the question, he will be murdered by Ethan. So, the question is "What have I stolen to you?", first of all the doctor answers "My liberty" but Ethan says that liberty is just an illusion, something that he has never had. Then the answer is "My will" but Ethan answers that it's controlled by his fears. The correct answer is "My illusions", Ethan says that what he has done is just making him see the tip of the iceberg of the big problem. The domination is what makes mankind so evil.

I highly recommend it to all publics, all minds and all kind of beings. It's a lesson of life that we shouldn't forget.
